Short description
3D printing opens up innovative possibilities for surgery in the use of patient-specific implants and instruments. So far, the technology is still rarely used because the planning and
manufacturing process takes too long. The unique technology platform "Next3D" shortens the manufacturing time of 3D-produced implants and instruments to 24 hours. This is made possible by a
software-supported process chain that combines medical know-how with automated realisation processes.
The platform was developed by Leipzig University Hospital and Fraunhofer IWU. Two pilot products have already emerged from it: The so-called stereotactic frame is a placement aid for inserting
electrodes in the brain during Parkinson's therapy. The templates for vascular implants for the therapy of life-threatening aneurysms reduce the operating time by 90 minutes.
Next3D won the IQ Innovation Award of the City of Leipzig in 2019. A spin-off company is planned for the development, production and marketing of further products.
